Rotomoulding art … Breaking the mould!
 
Design and art meet rotomoulding technology

Enzos

Places of art hosting objects created using rotational moulding technology. A concept that immediately conjures up the vision of Enzos: abstract forms designed by the architects Anna Popelka and Georg Poduschka, in collaboration with the designers Margarita Navarro and Ludwig Slezak. Shapes that are open to a variety of interpretations by their users, stimulating them to come up with new ideas for their use. Robust, washable objects that can be combined – thanks to their surfaces, nooks and edges – in endless variations to form new and different structures. These pieces stand in the courtyard of Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier. During the summer, the Enzos become lounge chairs of an extravagant shape and colour, which can be hooked up to each other and laid out in various ways. During the winter, they are stacked up vertically to form igloos or booths selling hot punch, “cinemas in the cold”, “ice labyrinths” or fences. Veritable elements of urban design.

Svaso . The non-vase

Roberto Talaia, architect and entrepreneur, has successfully employed rotational moulding technology to meld design and art in his Svaso (the non-vase). A vase-non-vase, an example of the art of our time: colourful, chrome-plated, floodlit. A challenging spiral space. Exactly what a Svaso is supposed to contain remains a riddle waiting for a solution. Ugo Nespolo, the great cosmopolitan artist, took up Mr. Talaia's challenge and revisited the Svaso creating ten different personalized variations of it. A great artistic achievement. Dreams and reality, bold ideas and a final product of excellent quality. Twenty limited-edition versions of Mr. Talaia's Svaso have been exhibited: ten in different colours and finishes, and ten transformed into sculptures by Mr. Nespolo.
The technology
Rotational moulding technology can be viewed as a successful synthesis between creativity and functionality. It provides huge freedom in design and affords fewer constraints compared to other manufacturing processes for plastics components. 
During the last few years, this technology has burst into the world of furniture, design and art. The reason is that one of the strong points of rotomoulding is the capability to make plastic objects with very complex shapes that retain the insulating properties and weathering resistance needed for outdoor use. The materials are solution dyed using high UV-resistance dyes, and thus the bright colours will tend not to fade over time.

Potential
Rotomoulding can be used to manufacture open or closed parts of any size with either simple or complex shapes. The moulded parts can be coloured, translucent or transparent, flexible or rigid.
Rotomoulding is a competitive process, particularly for small- to medium-sized production lots. Progress in mouldable materials and process control tools has turned rotational technology into an attractive alternative to other manufacturing processes.
